Problems and Excuses

Today I am going to address EXCUSES and PROBLEMS. We all make excuses up in order to get out of something we don't enjoy or fear. And just when I think I have heard them all, one of my clients manages to come up with something so new and creative that I have to concede and just chuckle. Yes, I do chuckle from time to time.

Excuses stem from your fears and from being jostled out of our comfort zone. I believe it's the fear of success more than failure that prohibits most of you from taking the next step whether that is losing weight or something else in your life. Success means change and change is scary. We are creatures of habit and we are willing to forgo happiness and our dreams rather than face one minute of pain. I'll give you an example. One of my closest friends was stuck in a position he dreaded, with an incompetent boss, and low pay. Yet he continued to plug along day after laborious day being miserable and unhappy. When I asked him why he kept choosing to be in this state he told me: "I'm afraid of change". It wasn't failure; it was the fact that he might have to change his daily routine. He would rather come to work and dread every waking minute of the day, rather than find his calling. I persuaded him to move on and find another job where he was not taken for granted and where he would relish walking through the front door. Today he manages a chain of health clubs.

Excuse after excuse after excuse creates PROBLEMS. Problems are and will always be in your life, but you don't need to create more. The way you solve problems dictates how you will live your life. Think about that for a minute. I recently heard a story of a young man who was a world-class swimmer and for some reason decided to jump off a bridge into a body of water below. He misjudged the depth of the water and ended up breaking his neck. Well he could have sat around (no pun intended) and commiserated about his life and asked why me? He could have made excuse after excuse and just given up. Who would blame him? Instead he took his problem and solved it. He is now a successful writer and artist using his mouth instead of his hands to maneuver a pen. He tackled his problems head on and found a way to solve them rather than make excuses.

On the other hand I recently came across a man standing in front of my local Safeway who happened to be smoking a cigarette. There was nothing unusual about that until I noticed that strapped to his side was a portable oxygen bottle. I was flabbergasted! Here was a person with obvious breathing issues, forced to use oxygen, and yet he was smoking! Lets put aside the fact that he was killing himself with every puff, he was also endangering his life by having a lit cigarette near oxygen!! Imagine how many excuses he has invented not to quit smoking.

You must find a way to tackle your problems and defeat them. I hear constantly how people cannot lose weight, can't do this, can't do that and I ask them why? It is then the excuses start pouring out. Break out of your comfort zone people. You will see that nothing is unattainable when you focus and set goals for yourself. Small steps that will lead you to the finish. When you don't have clearly defined goals then you keep coming up with reasons not to realize your full potential. The difference between a thin in shape person and one who is overweight and out of shape are goals. The one in shape desires to be that way and him or she has set up goals and rules. The other one makes constant excuses as to why they will never be thin.

My trainer is no good, I can't do this, my body is just not made for exercise, I'm big boned, etc., etc. Let me put the myth of BIG BONES to rest right now. THERE IS NO SUCH THING.

SANTA CLAUS has personally assured me of that. Everyone's' bones are the same size. Some are longer (height difference) some are denser (athletes) but there is no such thing as BIG BONES unless you are related to Bigfoot. Action creates results folks and yes you will fail from time to time. Heck you will fail a lot. Accept that fact and move on. If you are resigned to believing that pain is what you will derive from failing then that is what you will. If you are committed to believing exercise and a diet will cause you great pain then you will make up every excuse in the book to avoid them. Change the way you think and you will change the way you feel. You control all of the above and your destiny. No one else does. Confidence is a muscle, exercise it.
